The Moving Process

The cycle of a move is complex and flexible, with many options. Here is an example of how a typical move may proceed.

Other services (car transportation, appliance servicing, pet handling, etc) can also be arranged on your behalf as needed.

  • The Survey

“Survey” refers to when the salesperson visits your home to get a list of the items you need moved. The end result of a survey is an estimated shipment weight, which is the key factor in determining pricing.

The survey also gives us insights into what other factors will impact your move, such as crating for delicate items, what size of truck will fit on your street & property, specialty third party services such as dismantling a pool table or draining a water line on a refrigerator, and a host of other details. In some situations this visual survey can be omitted, but we then may not be able to put a guarantee on our estimate.

  • The Estimate

The estimate is a written list of requested moving services and the associated charges, and will display all items in detail (see Legal Requirements for more information on why we do that instead of showing just a total). An estimate should state what will determine the final pricing for the move – whether it’s a firm bid, guaranteed not to exceed by more than 10%, based on the actual scaled weight, or actual time taken (only applicable to local moving for Winnipeg & area).

  • Packing Service

Whether it’s pillows and teddy bears, or the delicate porcelain you inherited from your great-grandmother, we can pack your household items safely in boxes to ensure they survive the trip to your new home. Packing includes wrapping items in packing paper and placing them snugly into moving boxes. Extra paper is crumpled and placed in empty spaces to ensure there is no room for items in a box to shift or move around.

We can utilize FROGBOX reusable containers for this on local moves, if requested.

  • Loading

This process differs based on the type of move in one aspect. For long distance moves (and for moves going into local storage), our movers prepare a full listing of the items being moved, as well as any pre-existing damage on them. For local moves in Winnipeg & the surrounding region, this step is omitted to save time, since local moving prices are determined based on an hourly rate.

Apart from that, the process is the same. Wood furniture is wrapped in padded blankets, and upholstered furniture and mattresses are put in large bags to prevent soiling. Some larger items like desks or treadmills may need to be disassembled to facilitate moving them (anything our movers take apart will be reassembled).

  • Storage

People generally need storage if they are waiting for the keys for their new home, needing rooms emptied for renovations, or simply decluttering.

We have the capability to store your things in our 50,000 ft² warehouse for as little or as much time as you need. The warehouse is climate controlled, secured, and has monitored alarm service.

  • 6
  • Delivery

When we move your things into your new home, we will place furniture and boxes into the rooms under your direction. Our movers will reassemble anything they needed to disassemble in your old home.

  • 7
  • Unpacking

So now you’re in your new home and you have dozens, maybe hundreds, of moving boxes. Some people prefer to take their time to unpack them and find places for the contents at a leisurely rate. Others want all the help they can get unpacking so they can get settled in as quickly as possible. We can handle the unpacking for you, but we won’t know where to put things.

Our unpack service includes opening the boxes, removing the packing paper, and putting the contents on your tables, countertops, beds, (basically any flat surface) so you can put things in their proper place. At the end of the day, we will take away all the empty moving boxes and packing paper. Note that if you unpack yourself, you’ll be left with a pile of boxes that is too big for your local recycling. We can arrange for somebody to come by and pick them up, but there may be a cost associated with that.

  • What if there’s Damage?

We take great care to train our movers with the moving industry’s best practices and our own innovations in how to move things safely and effectively. Yet it is true that damage can happen regardless of how careful we are.

Our claims philosophy is simple: a claim represents a service failure, but it gives us a chance to demonstrate our higher standard of care so that we can earn your repeat and referral business. We aim to make the claim process simple and quick, and are committed to working collaboratively with our customers to find a mutually satisfactory resolution. Filing a claim with Quick Transfer is not a complicated process like a home insurance claim often is, and we have purposefully made it this way.
