Things To Include In An Overnight Bag: First Night In Your New Home

Being prepared for your first night in your new home

Moving can be an overwhelming time. Packing up everything you own, and transporting it to your new home. No matter whether you are moving across the city, or moving across the country, there are a number of things you need to prepare, before your movers arrive on move day. Within that broad category of things to prepare is an overnight bag. As you determine what things to include in an overnight bag, you may sit back and think, is it even necessary? Let’s consider the fact that, most moves will take a significant amount of time (most average moves will take up most of the day). At the end of the day, you are generally pretty tired. The last thing you want to do, is start picking through a bunch of boxes looking for items that you’ll need. That’s where the overnight bag comes in handy.

Here are some things to include in an overnight bag, as you prepare for your upcoming local move.

Clothes

As you determine what things to include in an overnight bag, consider whether or not you need to work the next day. If you do, then you need  to include work appropriate attire. If you have a couple of days off to deal with the unpack, then include clothes that you feel comfortable unpacking in. When determining what things to include in an overnight bag, include things such as sweat pants, or comfortable jeans along with a comfortable sweater, as they are the least constricting clothes to wear as you unpack.

Toiletries and medication

As you prepare your overnight bag, be sure to include toiletries and any medication that you require. When figuring out what things to include in an overnight bag for your upcoming move, include things such as tooth brushes (and toothpaste), toilet paper, deodorant, razors, shampoo (and or body wash) and any contacts or supplies that you may need for your eyes. As mentioned, move day can be tiring, and the last thing that you want to do, is spend time looking through boxes for tooth brushes or tooth paste after a long day.

A couple towels and shower curtains (If applicable)

After a long day of moving, a shower can be one of the best things in the world. As you put together some things to include in an overnight bag, having these things ready will allow you to avoid rummaging through boxes to be able to take a shower.

Paper plates and utensils

Make sure that you include some paper plates and utensils, so that on move day, you can easily eat. If you order in food on moving day, you will need something to eat it on. It can often be easier to eat at home instead of going out. By including plates and utensils in your overnight bag, you ensure that you at least have an option. When determining what things to include in an overnight bag, make sure to choose paper or plastic plates to keep clean up to a minimum.

Accessories

As you figure out what things to include in an overnight bag, consider what accessories that you will need. This can range from things such as cell phone and iPod chargers to keys, to dental floss sticks and much more. These small things can be difficult to locate, due to their small size after they are packed. Be proactive and include them in your overnight bag, instead of needing them, and having to search for them in all your packed boxes.

Snacks/meals

You will need to eat on move day. If you’re looking to save a few bucks, this can be a great way of saving. Take some time to put together some snacks for move day, or even an easy meal. While eating out once isn’t the end of the world, eating out a couple times can add up. If you’re unpacking yourself, and don’t have time off work to unpack, it can take a couple days, and the costs can certainly add up over the course of a few meals.

Important documents

As you’re determining what things to include in an overnight bag, make sure to include any important documents. We always suggest that you take small documents with you. During the unpack, these things can get caught up in the packing paper, and inadvertently thrown away. Plus, if you need them, you at least have them handy. Make sure to include these things in your overnight bag.

There are a lot more things that you can include in your overnight bag, but these are a few of the main items to include. Of course, different people need different things, but these are general items that most people use, and or need. Take some time to sit down and think through what sort of items that you will need when you move into your new home. The more time you are able to allot to planning things out, the better prepared you will be for any situation. For more advice on how to best unpack, make sure to check out our blog!
